American Horror Story Season 3 – Coven
American Horror Story Season 3: Coven premiered on October 9, 2013, and ended on January 29, 2014. It takes place in 2013, in New Orleans and also features some flashbacks to the year 1830s, 1910s, and 1970s.
Series co-creator Ryan Murphy said: “I sorta feel like for the third version I want to do something that’s a little bit more ‘evil glamour.’ Just something that’s a little bit more…one of the things that I missed this season was I really loved having that Romeo and Juliet youth story with Violet and Tate [from the first season]. I want something like that again and we’re doing something like that in the third season. And we’re contemplating shooting the show in a different place. We’re contemplating shooting it in a place in the country where true horror has been.”
Executive producer Tim Minear added that the theme of the season is on “oppression of minorities of all kinds, and within that idea, minority groups going after each other and doing the work of the larger culture” and also have a strong feminist theme.
In the third season of AHS, it revolves around the descendants of the Coven of Salem in Miss Robichaux’s Academy located in New Orleans. Those who were sent to the academy are Zoe Benson (Taissa Farmiga), Madison Montgomery (Emma Roberts), Queenie (Gabourey Sidibe) and Nan (Jamie Brewer) wherein each of them has a different power.
Zoe can induce brain hemorrhage by having sex with a man. When she arrived at that academy, she met Madison with telekinetic powers that was once a child actress and has just recovered from drug abuse, Queenie is a descendant of Tituba which gave her the power to harm others by harming herself but without feeling any pain. And the last but not the least is Nan who is an enigmatic clairvoyant and has the ability to hear the thoughts of other people.
Headmistress Cordelia Foxx (Sarah Paulson) runs the academy but she lives under the shadow of her mother Fiona Goode (Jessica Lange), who is known as the “Supreme” in the Coven. Fiona has specific gifts and some magical abilities that are called the Seven Wonders of Witchcraft. Also in the academy is a mute butler Spalding (Denis O’Hare), who has a mysterious connection with Fiona. The Coven is assessed by The Council of Witchcraft that includes the rival of Fiona and the mother figure of Cordelia, Myrtle Snow (Frances Conroy).
Zoe meets Kyle Spencer (Evan Peters), a fraternity president and showed interest on her. Meanwhile, Madison was gang raped by the frat brothers of Kyle. To revenge, Madison flipped their bus using her powers killing Kyle and six other guys. Two of the frat members where in a critical condition and was brought to the hospital but Madison went there too to kill them.
To make it up to Zoe, Madison revived Kyle by attaching limbs from his frat brothers into him but he became frightened and simple-minded after the resurrection. Later on, it was revealed that Kyle was a victim of sexual abuse by his mother who makes it hard for him to trust any physical touch. When Kyle was revived, he attracted Misty Day (Lily Rabe) who is a witch who managed to resurrect herself after being burned at a stake.
Meanwhile, as a new Supreme is rising, Fiona is cursed with cancer but she tries to regain her cure youth and finds a cure with the help of voodoo priestess Marie Laveau (Angela Bassett) who is also a rival of the Salem witches.
Marie is immortal because of her dealing with the voodoo devil, Papa Legba (Lance Reddick). Fiona frees 19th-century slave killer Delphine LaLaurie (Kathy Bates), who is an immortal prisoner of Marie. Delphine then became a maid in the academy but it was hard for her to adjust to the modern world.
Since Fiona wants to be the Supreme forever, she slit the throat of Madison believing that she is the next Supreme. Spalding helped her cover it up but Zoe discovered the dark secrets of Spalding and killed him. He was then turned into a ghost who haunts the Coven.
Cordelia was a victim of acid attack by some witch hunters (one of them is her husband) which made her blind. Meanwhile, Myrtle was framed by Fiona with the help of Queenie and she was burned at the stake.
Back in 1919, the witches in the Coven were killed by Axeman (Danny Huston), whose ghost is trapped in the walls of the building. While Zoe was trying to communicate with the spirit of Madison through an Ouija board, she accidentally frees the ghost of the Axeman, who then had a romance with Fiona.
Misty managed to revive Myrtle and Madison. Both of the witches returned with vengeful notions as Madison seduced Kyle while Myrtle killed the Council of Witchcraft. As for Queenie, she joined the voodoo tribe and gives Delphine to them. Delphine was tortured and beheaded but is still alive. Queenie then killed the husband of Cordelia, Hank (Josh Hamilton), who slaughtered the tribe, nearly killing Marie.
Since Marie felt very hopeless, she decided to join the academy. She also helped Fiona to drown Nan to remove a Supreme candidate and fulfill a deal with Legba. Queenie also returned with a reattached Delphine. The witch hunters were slaughtered by Fiona, Marie and the Axeman.
In an attempt to eliminate a candidate for Supreme, Madison entombed Misty but Queenie and Cordelia brought Misty back. Queenie makes a deal with Legba to return her to mortality and kills Delphine. Marie, who was dissected by Delphine, is banished to Hell with her killer. The Axeman was killed by the witches after Fiona made him believe that he killed her.
To finally find the next Supreme, the witches undergo the test of Seven Wonders. While doing different tests, Misty and Zoe died. Since Queenie wasn’t able to revive Zoe, she was disqualified. Madison then refused to continue after she failed a test and Kyle killed her for not saving Zoe.
Cordelia steps in to join the competition and she was able to bring Zoe back to life which made her the new Supreme. She also regained her sight and reveals the Coven to the world. Myrtle was once again burned at the stake for killing the Council.
Meanwhile, Queenie and Zoe were appointed in the Council and Kyle becomes the academy’s new butler. Fiona came back to the Coven who is very weak due to cancer. After making amends with her daughter, she died on her arms.
Now that the academy is under new management, Cordelia, Queenie, Zoe, and Kyle opened the doors to the newly recruited witches.
